On February 6, 2021, HHS partnered with the Friendship Committee and Technology to host “A Green Apron Affair: Heart Healthy Cooking with Chef Shawn Holland” from 4-5:30pm in recognition of February as HEARTLINKS / Heart Health Awareness Month. This exciting and fun Heart Healthy Cooking Demo with Chef Shawn of Sophisticated Catering, Inc. promoted heart health and
wellness and was an effort to address and decrease heart disease risks among African American women. The afternoon included learning heart health facts, tips for healthy cooking including substitutions to lower salt and fat, preparing a delicious heart healthy meal for 2 and taking a “boogie down dance break” to line dance and get in steps which also decreases heart disease risks to great old school music. Participants prepared pan seared salmon with lemon-thyme beurre blanc, mushroom risotto, roasted brussels sprouts with cherry peppers & prosciutto, and dessert of their choice. The meal was delicious, and a great time was had by all! A total of 44 participants attended the event including 32 members of the chapter along with 8 Connecting Links and Heir-o-Links, Chef Shawn and his 3 guests. A week prior to the event, “Link Elves” from HHS Facet and Friendship safely met to assemble lovely gifts for participants to pique the interest of Link Sisters and maximize engagement, and then delivered the beautiful decorative gifts which included custom green aprons, cooking utensils, menus, ingredient lists and event agendas. Link sisters are asked to wear red for our February Chapter meeting to continue to recognize Heart Health Month.
